Nowadays lots of banks have cash deposit machines for the ease of customers. Cash deposit machines are available in bank branches or at ATM outlets. If the cash deposit machine (CDM) is at the bank branch, you can deposit money only during banking hours. But if the CDM is at the ATM outlet, you can deposit money at any time.
Is it possible to deposit money in your bank account through another bank’s cash deposit machine?
Generally, no, you cannot. You can deposit cash in your bank account only through your bank’s CDM.
But of course you can deposit cash at a CDM in one branch of the bank if you have an account in another branch of the same bank.
When can you deposit cash at another bank’s CDM?
Very few CDMs are inter-operable, i.e. if you have an account in one bank, you can use an inter-operable CDM of another bank to deposit cash. This is a part of NPCI’s (National Payments Corporation of India) plan to modernize banking.
So, if you have an account in Union Bank of India, Andhra Bank, or the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-op Bank, you can use CDMs at either of these banks’ ATM’s to deposit cash in your account. Please note that not all CDMs of these banks even are enabled for this facility.
People often have the question whether all ATMs accept cash deposits or not. The answer to this is no. Some machines are only ATMs, some are only CDMs, and some are ATM cum CDM machines.
You can deposit cash in a CDM using your debit card or by entering your account number.
