What is CIF number & How to find CIF Number of SBI in Chequebook

While banking, one often comes across the term CIF number or CIF code. So what exactly is this? In this article, we will discuss the meaning of CIF number, along with how to find out your CIF number, both online and offline.

What is the full form of CIF Number?

Full form of CIF number for banking purpose is – Customer Information File, which is unique for a customer.


What is CIF number?

  • It is a digital or virtual file containing all the important banking details of the account holder.
  • The CIF number is an 11 digit number representing the file. It is unique for every customer.
  • All the customer’s accounts are linked to the one CIF number given to the customer. So even if you have more than one account, you will have only one CIF number.
  • It is decoded by the bank to retrieve all the personal and financial information of the customer.
  • This includes details regarding loans, demat, etc. It also includes all your KYC details like identity details, address details, and a photo ID.
  • Hence it helps the bank to view all your accounts’ information easily in one place.

How to find out your CIF number/code?

There are many ways to find out your CIF number. You can follow either of these methods for SBI. The process for other banks is also similar.

Online Methods

1. Internet Banking

  • Login to Internet Banking.

  • Now choose Account Statement (E – Statement) for a particular period.

  • The Account Summary page will display your CIF number among other details.

2. Mobile App

You can also find out your CIF number from the SBI mobile app.


Offline Methods

1. How to find CIF number in SBI Cheque Book

  • Open the first page of your SBI Cheque Book.
  • You will find the CIF number printed on the first page.

2. How to find CIF number in SBI Passbook?

The CIF number is sometimes printed on the first page of your bank passbook. Please, refer to the screenshot below.

3. Customer Care Number

Call the customer care number of the bank, verify your details, and ask for your CIF number. The toll-free numbers for SBI are 1800 11 2211, 1800 425 3800 and 080-26599990.

4. Bank Branch

You can simply find out your CIF number from the counter at the bank branch. Give your account number, and request the executive to tell you your CIF number.
